ABOUT
Center of Hope started the summer of 2008 under the direction of Doris A. Wiles. Her vision started as Vacation Bible School and it led into something greater than she could imagine. Soon she had a full staff, and I had the opportunity to be apart of it. After VBS, she decided to continue her journey and so she began an after-school program for the inner-city youth.
Center of Hope quickly transformed from Vacation Bible School to a fully active youth center located inside of New Life Ministries. The center included, computers for homework or social activities, video games, a lounge area to relax and watch tv, and the outside basketball court. The Center of Hope lasted until 2012 when 1st Lady Wiles moved to Dallas TX.
In 2015 Center of Hope reopened with the same vision, but under new leadership. The Center of Hope was focused on being a light in a dark year. With so many young people losing their life to gun violence, Center of Hope began to take back our community. Soon God gave Center of Hope a mission. Our mission was, and still is, to bring Hope back to the Center of our community. We started small (in April) with a community Easter Egg Hunt held at Summit Park. By August 2015, Center of Hope connected with Merrill School with their community walks and soon the neighborhood felt safe again. August 2015 Center of Hope hosted our largest community event “Operation Our Community” located at Summit Park. There we blessed 200 inner-city youths with backpacks.
Center of Hope had a great year from 2015-16. We shut down due to jobs and I moved to Katy TX, but our hearts were still heavily connected to our community. In April 2018 me and my Husband moved back to WI and soon found ourselves right back working with the children of our urban community. We began small in June 2018 by becoming one of the locations to feed our local community children through the School District of Beloit. By the end of the summer we were feeding almost 40 to 50 kids a day and that is when The Center of Hope began to breathe life again.
I believe 1st Lady Wiles would be so proud to see her vision still being carried out today. She had a heart for children and if I had the opportunity I know she would smile and say, “Keep going and be that woman God has called you to be.”
